Hi Dad, I went to Istanbul in March and I lit a candle for you in a little church I found. It was the anniversary of your death. I wish you could have been there with me: you’d have loved exploring the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Galata Tower and all the little side streets. I even think you might have enjoyed some of the food - well, maybe… I can dream... I went with Erman and my friend Helen. Erman knows every street and speaks the language, of course. He was the perfect native guide. You didn’t get to know him well before you died, but the more I think about it the more i think you’d have got on really well. Even though you’re poles apart politically, you have lots in common! We had a hotel room which looked out across the Bosphorus. Every morning I’d look out at the view and think how much you’d appreciate it. Lots of love. Jack x
